Junior Rugby increases in Victoria Melbourne Rugby Club

RECORD GROWTH FOR VICTORIAN JUNIOR RUGBY

The state of Rugby in Victoria has never been healthier according to participation data released by the Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) last week. Participation in the state has increased 38 percent in 2016, to nearly 16,000 participants, through 15-a-side Rugby, Sevens Rugby, VIVA 7s and Game-On primary school development program.

WOMEN’S RUGBY INCREASES IN HISTORIC OLYMPIC YEAR

According to recent figures released by the Australian Rugby Union, Women’s rugby participation continues to soar worldwide as well as in Australia. The ‘Olympic’ effect of the Women’s Sevens Rio gold medal in 2016 was significant, contributing to a thirty three percent spike in female Rugby Sevens participation. Meanwhile, Women’s Club XVs rugby grew by a massive twenty four percent.

Melbourne Rugby Club Women's State Representatives 2017

UNICORNS DOMINATE WOMEN’S STATE TEAM SELECTIONS

The 2017 Women’s State Team was recently announced and players from the Melbourne Rugby Club have dominated at the selection table. Eight women from the Unicorns have been selected to play for the State in two tournaments. Firstly, at the Southern States Tournament in Wagga Wagga this weekend (April 8-9) and then at the National Championships being played on the Gold Coast, May 11-14. Last season was a phenomenal year for the Melbourne Rugby Club. Not only did the 1st grade win the Dewar Shield, but we also had all four Senior grades competing on Grand Final day – winning three of the four finals. The results were off the back of a good Club culture that filtered throughout all grades and the commitment of all the players throughout the year was outstanding.

2017 Women's Rugby Summer 10s Tournament Finalists

WOMEN’S TEAM FINISH RUNNERS UP AT SUMMER 10s

At the recent Women’s Rugby Summer 10s Tournament held at Harlequins Rugby Club, the Melbourne Unicorns were dealt a tough draw with the defending Premiers Uni Panthers first up. With only five returning players and the rest of the squad new to rugby or the Club it was an unknown package. The players had been working hard through the preseason on their core skills and game structure with Head Coach Alana Thomas and Assistant Coach Hartley Tawhiri.
