Recently the Victorian Rugby and the Melbourne Rebels celebrated the contribution of our girls and women’s players across the state during Women’s Rugby Week. This fell in line with the State Team heading to the Gold Coast to participate in the National Championships.
The state of Rugby in Victoria has never been healthier according to participation data released by the Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) last week. Participation in the state has increased 38 percent in 2016, to nearly 16,000 participants, through 15-a-side Rugby, Sevens Rugby, VIVA 7s and Game-On primary school development program.

According to recent figures released by the Australian Rugby Union, Women’s rugby participation continues to soar worldwide as well as in Australia. The ‘Olympic’ effect of the Women’s Sevens Rio gold medal in 2016 was significant, contributing to a thirty three percent spike in female Rugby Sevens participation. Meanwhile, Women’s Club XVs rugby grew by a massive twenty four percent.
