Women’s Rugby minor Premiers, The Melbourne Unicorns, take on Harlequins / Souths Hunters in a knockout Semi Final clash on Saturday. The Unicorns finished top of the table, having lost only three games and drawn once this season.

Both teams have met three times this year, with the Unicorns taking out the win each time. In a hard fought battle with the Hunters last weekend the Unicorns came out on top 43 – 24.

In the last competition game for the season, both teams did not disappoint as they battled well in a curtain raiser clash before the Semi Finals.  The Unicorns used this last game to fine tune and iron out any kinks in their game scoring three quick tries after some swift moves and safe hands out in the back line. Kicker, Georgia Cormick finished off this good work, converting three out of four attempts in the first half.

The second half was a forwards’ game, with the Hunters hitting the Unicorns’ tight five hard. The Hunters were able to score three tries through the centre with some hard running. The Hunters were after the win, but were not able to get enough points on the board and were held out many times by some great defence by the Unicorns’ forward pack.

One thing is for sure in this week’s game and that is the match will be an equally tough battle with both teams vying for a spot in the Women’s Rugby Grand Final.

Melbourne Unicorns Head Coach, John Pulepule said, “I am very impressed by the level of Women’s Rugby in Victoria, and to be associated with a club who supports Women’s Rugby.”

The Unicorns have prepared well and have been focused in their last few games from the first kick-off. They have a great squad of highly dedicated and talented women. In fact, six players were selected for the National Championships – with a further two selected who could not attend due to injury. The team also boasts State Assistant Coach, Alana Thomas, as a player / coach.

Asked about the season so far Pulepule said, “I could not be prouder of the hard work and desire I have seen from the team this year. It’s a hard task to put together a team with only twenty players to select from. They have all played through injuries and made sacrifices with family, work and life to get down to the pitch week in and week out. I am confident that we have done the work and will have a great game on Saturday. Regardless of the result, I know every single player will have done their very best, and well what a season it has been!”
