The BLK Dewar Shield moved into finals over the weekend, with both Semi Finals offering mouth-watering match ups. It was a classic winters day in the Victorian capital, with blistering winds and fresh, overcast conditions. This weather came into play when the undefeated Harlequins squared off against second seed Melbourne.
Harlequins (1) v Melbourne (2)
In the top of the table clash down at Ashwood Reserve, Harlequins came out strong against Melbourne, showing why they have gone undefeated all season. Quins scored the first two tries to break out to a 12 – 0 lead. This seemed to spur Melbourne into action, with the Unicorns coming back and scoring the next two tries, meaning the teams headed into the sheds at 12 points apiece at the half.
Coming out of the break, a robust set piece from Harlequins set the foundation for the side to break away from Melbourne early in the second half, obtaining an ominous lead of 31-12. The game looked to be a foregone conclusion until late in the second half Melbourne finished strong with two swift tries to bring them within seven points.
In the end though Harlequins’ lead was insurmountable and they clinched a 31-24 win and now head straight into the Grand Final.
Melbourne on the other had find themselves in this weekend’s Preliminary Final to fight for a place in the final.
