The Melbourne Rugby Club hosted a junior Try Rugby Day on Sunday 13 February at Orrong Romanis Reserve.
Despite the heat, boys U6s up to U12s and girls of all ages joined in free clinics with Melbourne Rebels players Joe Pincus and Jeral Skelton.
The club coaches, senior players and Rugby Victoria Development Officer Ben Cooper set out a range of activities to introduce new players to the game of Rugby Union and to reignite the spark in current players for the start of the 2022 winter season. Players ran through a variety of passing drills, tackling drills and evasive games and techniques.
“It’s such a thrill for the kids to get an opportunity to play with Melbourne Rebels players at a clinic like this. Joe Pincus and Jeral Skelton were fantastic, they were really involved and approachable,” explained Junior Coordinator, Michelle Iezzi.
The Melbourne Unicorns have an extensive junior program with teams in U6, U7, U8, U9, U10, U11, U12, U13, U14, U15, U16 and U18s.
New players are welcome at all ages and coaches are well-versed in getting them up to speed. The 2022 season will also include new competitions in girls tackle 7s and the introduction of boys 7s tournaments during the school holidays.
The Community ‘Try Rugby’ Day was finished off with a free BBQ for all players. The Melbourne Rugby Club is a volunteer-run community club and would like to acknowledge all the helpers on the day.
The 2022 Rugby Victoria Junior season starts in Term 2 with training returning to Orrong Park in early April.
