The 2016 Dewar Shield champions have gone the distance again and put themselves in a position to be crowned the best Club team in Victoria. The journey back to the Grand Final though has not been an easy one.

Melbourne Rugby Club legend and Master’s player Simon ‘Webby’ Webster has made his 400th appearance in a Unicorn jersey. To mark the occasion Webby insisted that he celebrated his milestone game against affiliated Club the Melbourne Chargers at home (even though this match was technically his 403rd game).

The state of Rugby in Victoria has never been healthier according to participation data released by the Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) and Australian Rugby Union (ARU) last week. Participation in the state has increased 38 percent in 2016, to nearly 16,000 participants, through 15-a-side Rugby, Sevens Rugby, VIVA 7s and Game-On primary school development program.

According to recent figures released by the Australian Rugby Union, Women’s rugby participation continues to soar worldwide as well as in Australia. The ‘Olympic’ effect of the Women’s Sevens Rio gold medal in 2016 was significant, contributing to a thirty three percent spike in female Rugby Sevens participation. Meanwhile, Women’s Club XVs rugby grew by a massive twenty four percent.

The Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) will hold it’s inaugural LGBTI Round on Saturday 8 April across all competitions in support of the ‘Rainbow Round of Sport’. This round will aim to raise awareness around the issue of LGBTI prejudice and to push the mantra that sport is for all.
