The Women’s Rugby Grand Final 2015 was definitely a ‘Clash of the Titans’ as the two top teams all season battled for that allusive silverware. The pitch was firm under foot, the weather was fit for purpose, and the Melbourne Unicorns were ready to take on the might of the Moorabbin Rams.
With a really healthy bench, the entire playing squad were as ready as they could be. From the first whistle it was intense with the Melbourne showing a few nerves in the opening minutes and the Rams taking first blood.
It was not long after the Unicorns pushed the ball out wide allowing Vicki Seeto to score in the corner to even the score. It was evident that the Rams were playing an up front game, which they have done all season, in great Unicorn spirit their defensive systems held up well.
There were a couple of critical moments in the game, where The Unicorns ball handling let them down, but not surprising each team member stepped up to the plate in support. A few changes mid-flight, lifted the energy, to a point the scores were even for the majority of the first half. The Rams crossed again before half-time, but missed both conversions.
A short message from the coaches set the platform for the second half, which saw some gains at the kick-off as the Unicorns chased the match to level the scores.
A barrage of attacks from the Rams mid-field and a defiant forward pack put them over the line twice early in the second half. Trailing 15 – 5 the determined Unicorns pushed forward, spreading the Rams defence and wearing down their forward pack. This paid dividends with Heseti Kopelani scoring with plenty of time to left to even the scores.
However, a number of opportunities towards the end were not converted to points and the Rams were victorious.
An outstanding performance by both teams, more importantly a fantastic season and campaign by the Unicorns Women’s team, who maintained top spot all season, taking out the Minor Premiership and the rights to be in the Grand Final.
