Saturday saw the Melbourne Unicorns Women’s team take on the Harlequins Souths (Hunters) which produced a classic Semi Final and a famous come from behind win.
The Melbourne Women’s team has had a long season and have lost several players to injuries which has depleted their full squad. On Saturday only 19 players hit the field. By contrast the Hunters had a full squad of 23 players and were determined to topple the Unicorns.
It was clear from the very start that the Hunters were seeking the win, and were set to take down the minor Premiers. Some quick moves saw them put two tries on the board, with the Unicorns yet to score. The Hunters then had three players sin binned in short succession and it was at this point the Unicorns rallied. Heseti Kopelani scored the first try after breaking through several tackles and making a committed and passionate dive at the try line. It was a crucial point in the Semi Finals as the Unicorns reset and started to play their game. At half time the score was 15 – 5.
If the first half went to the Hunters, it was clear the second half would go to the Unicorns. It was not long before Heseti again scored, with a huge amount of support from her fellow forwards. The backs had several great moves and gained many yards down the field. The Hunters defence was ready for the Unicorn backs and defended their line well. It was clear this was going to be a battle of wills. The game would not come down to skill or fitness or moves, but shear determination.
A slight change in the Melbourne back line, with Victoria Seeto and Alana Thomas coming on, gave the team another lift. Seeto made several breaks with Thomas setting up the moves. In the final minutes of the game, Oneata Schwalger made a crucial break, it was pure determination which saw her break through tackles and secure another try.
With two perfect conversions by Georgia Cormick, the Unicorns had it. If any game could be called a nail biter this was it. The Unicorns showed why they have remained at the top of the table all year.
Melbourne now take on Moorabbin at Box Hill at 10.45 on Saturday. The Women’s Rugby Grand Final will be a challenging game for the Unicorns, having won the last match against the Rams by just a single conversion.
