The Victorian Rugby Union (VRU) will hold it’s inaugural LGBTI Round on Saturday 8 April across all competitions in support of the ‘Rainbow Round of Sport’. This round will aim to raise awareness around the issue of LGBTI prejudice and to push the mantra that sport is for all.

The 2017 Women’s State Team was recently announced and players from the Melbourne Rugby Club have dominated at the selection table. Eight women from the Unicorns have been selected to play for the State in two tournaments. Firstly, at the Southern States Tournament in Wagga Wagga this weekend (April 8-9) and then at the National Championships being played on the Gold Coast, May 11-14. Read more

Season preview with Tumai Edwards
Last season was a phenomenal year for the Melbourne Rugby Club. Not only did the 1st grade win the Dewar Shield, but we also had all four Senior grades competing on Grand Final day – winning three of the four finals. The results were off the back of a good Club culture that filtered throughout all grades and the commitment of all the players throughout the year was outstanding.

At the recent Women’s Rugby Summer 10s Tournament held at Harlequins Rugby Club, the Melbourne Unicorns were dealt a tough draw with the defending Premiers Uni Panthers first up. With only five returning players and the rest of the squad new to rugby or the Club it was an unknown package. The players had been working hard through the preseason on their core skills and game structure with Head Coach Alana Thomas and Assistant Coach Hartley Tawhiri.

Prop Oneata Schwalger will be flying the flag for Victoria when the Buildcorp Wallaroos face the New Zealand Black Ferns in a two test series in New Zealand this October. As the lone Victorian representative in a 26-woman squad that includes 13 uncapped players, Schwalger said she is proud to represent the State wherever she goes.

In an entertaining game of rugby, Melbourne has defeated Harlequins by a single point to claim their 18th Premier Grade title. The two teams dominated the season finishing first and second. Both teams lost only one game each and drew their second match in the regular season.
